Modern Art Deco Bathroom Renovation and Inspiration

I purchased my first apartment back in 2021. It was in super rough shape and needed a more than a major facelift—everything was original to the 1980s and had not been well maintained or taken care of…

Given the Postmodern Style Revival we are seeing in the 2020’s, I wanted to go with something both trendy, but also timeless.

Check out these tiles! I opted for the “Dark Daisy” pattern from Floor & Decor.

Hexagon tiles have a long history in American design dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. People were focusing on cleanliness in a new way after the civil war and during the 1918 pandemic, in unison with the introduction of running water to American homes for the first time. This, and a desire to emulate European styles gave birth to the popular hexagonal tiles we know today. However, early bathrooms were tiled in all white and only later were more sophisticated designs and colors introduced.

This was my first renovation and my family did a majority of the work. To say it was overwhelming would be an understatement…

At first we did try and salvage some of the fixtures. Ultimately, we decided to rip out everything as it was all literally over 40 years old.

We ripped out everything to the studs and put in all new sheetrock and drywall.

The decorating and design process has honestly taken me about another year. I have really struggled with the pandemic and transition out of quarantine, so I have been trying to take things slow and recover emotionally and only work on my apartment and this blog when I feel truly up to it. I want this to be fun for me and enjoyable, rather than something that contributes to my burnout.
